Break Free from Your Comfort Zone to Energise Your Life

comfort zone

It's human nature to crave comfort. We often construct our environments to be safe, predictable, and, well, comfortable. But while there's nothing wrong with comfort zones, stepping out of them can be even more beneficial. Here’s why.

Within our comfort zones, we're able to conserve energy. To understand this better, let’s consider our mind as comprising two parts: System 1 and System 2, as described in Daniel Kahneman's book, "Thinking, Fast and Slow."

System 1 is our immediate, dominant system, which operates effortlessly and is used most of the time. For instance, solving simple maths like 2 + 2 = 4 happens quickly and without much thought.

System 2, on the other hand, is our critical, conscious system. It’s engaged when making more complex decisions, such as choosing a new paint colour for your house, which requires deliberate thought.

The dominance of System 1 means we gravitate towards routines and structures that are easy to manage. This might include daily rituals, habitual routes to work, or regular household chores like laundry, creating a comfort zone that doesn’t demand much mental energy.

While this sounds convenient, there’s a downside: over-relying on our comfort zone can lead to stagnation, stifling personal growth and progression. This is especially true in areas like exercise, where sticking to the same routines can prevent you from reaching new fitness goals.

Consider this: to achieve weight loss, you might need to vary your diet; to improve your movement quality, you might need to try new exercises; to run faster, you might switch up your running paths or distances. Growth requires change, and change pushes us out of our comfort zones.

Challenge Your Comfort Zone

To encourage growth, I want you to engage in two tasks:

  1. Identify Comfort Zones: Write down 3-5 areas in your life where you’re too comfortable—be it in relationships, career, fitness, or hobbies.

  2. Step Out: Challenge yourself to step outside these comfort zones. Whether it’s walking more if you’re usually sedentary, reading more books, tackling procrastinated tasks, starting a new hobby, or learning something new—make a change.
